Rollerskiing Up Alp d’Huez

It’s hard not to be noticed when you rollerski up Alp d’Huez

The following article was recently printed in Journal des Alp d’Huez (this is the super shortened version):

Locals and tourists couldn’t believe what they saw on July 8, 2005; a rollerskier coming up Alp d’Huez a few minutes ahead of the cyclists from the Discovery team. The rollerskier’s support car yelled out 1.14.47 when he crossed the finish banner. Was it a new record on classic rollerskis?

One of the Discovery team’s rider’s walked over to the rollerskier, looked at his skis, poles and boots, shock the skiers hand and said “Cool”.

This is a cool story, but it doesn't make sense. On 7/8, the tour was up north going into Germany. Nonetheless, it would be a heck of a lot of fun to try...

Additionally the Tour simply did not go up Alpe d'Huez on any day this year.

So...just exactly what were the Team Disco riders doing on top on July 8 ???... (joke !)

Perhaps this guy did not even rollerski up it ? This is a fishy tale. That would be one WICKED climb, and a worse descent on rollerskis. More power to him if he actually did that.

I don't know when or if this guy roller skied up to l'Alpe d'Huez or not but it's not that unusual.
Regional teams rollerski there sometimes during on glacier camps at l'Alpe d'Huez. Furthermore, the climb has been done as a race several times in the french Roller Ski Tour.

The climb isn't that bad; its around 20% at worst point. I ran up it in 2004, and survived. It wouldn't be too bad with classic roller skis.

ps: I passed lots of bikers running up it.
