Things that need improvement in future Nationals.
By Torbjørn Karlsen
Torbjørn filed this report shortly after returning from the 2002 Cross COuntry Nationals at Bohart Ranch in Bozeman, Montana.

The courses used at Bohart Ranch XC ski center are good and deserved a National Championship. A few areas regarding the organization at Nationals need improvement. Among these are:

The result service needs to improve. The timing of the sprint race was poor and results were slow and not trustworthy.

In a three-hour time span following the sprint race four results lists were presented.
Team NEI skier Cory Smith was 13th on the first one, 19th on the second one, 15th on the 3rd one that was up for several hours and made him believe he was in the final, wait at the stadium for three hours and wax up several pair of skis for the final. Then when he showed up to pick up his bib for the final, thirty minutes before start there was suddenly a new results list and he was now 17th and out of the final. We then wished for a 5th list, maybe THEN he would have been 12th?

A race of this size and magnitude needs more and better bathrooms, waxing and warming hut facilities. All that was offered in terms of wax rooms at the stadium was one tent that could handle about 8 wax tables. Those who couldn’t fit in there were forced to wax outside plugging into a generator. A big cold front, rain storm, heavy snow or similar would have created a waxing disaster for many teams.
Large warming tents or houses for athletes and coaches are also a must when you are dealing with delays and tough weather conditions.
